Interview with Gordan Tomic of Cojones.

e-mail interview with Gordan Tomic- bass/vocals in Cojones on March 3, 2013.

Cojones is a four piece rock band based in Zagreb, Croatia. The band formed in 2006 and includes Bojan Kocijan on vocals/guitars, Nenad Mandic on guitar, Miro Cosic on drums, and Gordan Tomic on bass/vocals.

By the end of 2007, Sonic Doom Records made its first release, a split album titled “Cojones & Umor” split LP. After the Mammoth March tour in 2008, Cojones started recording their first LP titled “Sunrise” which was released DIY through Sonic Doom Records in 2009. These guys played numerous gigs throughout Europe where they shared the stage with many great bands and played at Stoned from the Underground festival 2012 in Erfurt.

Their latest album is “Bend To Transcend” and it was finished and released completely DIY in the summer of 2012 as a vinyl only release and digital download, with all the merchandise surrounding the album handmade and printed by the band.

Your band has a throwback sound to a 1990’s vibe. Was that on purpose or did it just happen naturally?

Definitely wasn’t on purpose, but music from the 1990’s had a big influence on our music. We grew up with that music, so that’s probably the reason for that sound.

What kind of lessons did you learn about the recording process after your last album?

So far we recorded two albums, and every time we learned a lot. This time we learned that the most important thing in recording process is pre organization and the most important, practice.

How long did it take you to write and record your last album?

Whole thing really stretched, it was something like a year and a half. We started working on our new songs in the fall 2010 and then started recording 2011. The whole process of recording went little bit out of control, but we wanted to make a good job.

Well, your hard work paid off. Really great album. I love “Bend and Stretch.” During the recording, which band member had the hottest temper and why?

&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;a href="http://cojones.bandcamp.com/track/bend-stretch"&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;Bend &amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp; Stretch by Cojones&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;/a&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;
Ha ha, we are all really into our music so we fight a lot. There is no one specific...maybe me.

Give me an example of something you guys argued about.

We usually argue about some parts of the song, no big deal. It’s more like a loud arguement than a real fight.

Go ahead a describe something about each band member, including yourself, and what you each bring to the band.

I’ll start with Bojan, who is our vocalist and guitar player. Bojan is definitely the frontman of the band. He is some kind of, let’s say dreamer. He comes with crazy ideas. Nenad on guitar is a rock star guy, he always comes with hot riffs. Miro is the drummer, he and I are more to the ground guys, but also very innovative.

When you guys are touring, who really smells bad?

We all do, but we try to keep it under control.

Come on, there is always one guy who is always worse than the rest.

Ha ha, I fart a lot.

What is your favorite song on the last album and why?

When I think about it, I always come to conclusion that I like them all equally. Maybe “Tide” is upper.

&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;a href="http://cojones.bandcamp.com/track/tide"&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;Tide by Cojones&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;/a&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;

I am really impressed with the quality of the production on the album, well done.

Thanks! We are also really satisfied

Were you in the studio when Bojan let out the scream on “As Far as it Goes”? It’s a killer scream!

I really don't remember, I think I was there.

Any plans for touring the U.S.A.?

We would really love to but so far we haven’t found a good promoter. It’s kind of a mystery to us.

You have been together since 2006. What is the hardest thing about keeping a band together?

I think that having a band is like marriage. You have to work hard, communicate a lot, give yourself into it, and then it works.

What girlfriend has been a pain in the ass when it comes to the band?

Our girls will probably read this so...

Ha ha...I thought I would try!

Ha ha! Of course when I talked about marriage, it’s a marriage without sex, so it’s even harder.

What are some upcoming plans for Cojones?

Well, we started working on new songs, so probably new album. Not sure when, and play as much as we can.

Describe your live show.

It’s an energy driven, sweaty pure rock show. I forgot loud!

Cool, thanks for your time.

Thank you, it was really fun.

New interview with Mike Emmons from Evil Eye Gypsy

Phone Interview with Mike Emmons of Evil Eye Gypsy
January 2013
by Eldon McGraw

I spoke with Mike Emmons - guitar player, harmonica, keyboard player and one of the songwriters for the Dayton, Ohio based band Evil Eye Gypsy. The band describes their music as an eclectic mix of psychedelic, blues, alternative, hard rock and folk music. They have a big guitar sound that touches on the shoegaze movement. The bands' three guitarist's create a dynamic that moves smoothly from haunting soundscapes to a huge wall of sound. Behind this is a strong rhythm section driven by powerful drums and punctuated with monster bass lines. On top of it all are soulful vocals that tell their stories.

The band is influenced by Cowboy Junkies, Mazzy Star, Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, The Grateful Dead, The Dreden Dolls, Ween and The Flaming Lips.

Other members of the band include - Wolfgang Emmons - Guitar, Vocals, Keyboards, Percussion, Violin, Sara Osborne - Vocals, Keyboards, Nick Jones - Bass, Jay Weng - Guitar, Vocals, Keyboards, Sherree Jane - Percussion, Vocals, and Paul Jacinto - Drums.

(Mike Emmons of Evil Eye Gypsy)

What did you have for breakfast today?

(Laughs) Two chocolate chip cookies.

Now that is nutrition!

Breakfast of champions man.

Your band Evil Eye Gypsy are releasing your second album, "After the Last Horizon," coming out on April 13, 2013. Tell me about the writing and recording process for your second album?

We took our time, we wanted to space it out. We want to produce good music that we enjoy playing. We don’t feel the need to really rush anything. I write in spurts. Suddenly I will get an idea and I will go to the studio and I will be there all day and come down with three songs of scratch tracks. Then the other musicians come in and lay down their parts along with vocals. The other songwriter in the band (Wolfgang Emmons), he is more prolific than me. He is a singer/songwriter type.

Is there a competition among songwriters in your band?

No competition at all. We have always been able to play together, but we don’t write together.

You said you want to make good music. What is good music to you?

When I say that, it does not mean our music is better than anyone else. I mean good music for ourselves and the best that we can do. I just want to write and produce the best music that I am capable of. I don’t ever want to be forced and rushed.

What can your fans expect from your new album, "After the Last Horizon," compared to your last album, "Dirt Roads"?

One thing I don’t ever try and do is recapture what we have done. I pushed everything out of my mind from the first one. We originally had more of the 70’s or early 90’s Grunge sound on some of the songs. As the album progressed though, we had some weird stuff develop. I feel musically we have become more of a band on this one. There is going to be more variety of sounds and soundscapes on this one. I don’t think anyone is going to listen to this one and say “Well that just sounds like their first cd.”

You are one of the songwriters in the band and you are a male, but you have a female singer singing some of the songs you have written, how do you write knowing a female will sing your songs?

(voaclist - Sara Osborne)

It’s kind of strange. I found I had a knack for writing for a female vocalist. The trick for me is to realize when people are listening to a song sung by a female vocalist, they are automatically going to think about the romantic side. I have been married for thirty years and I don’t have any big break up stories in my life. Just through life, people who have let you down, my thoughts tend to deal with that kind of stuff. It’s actually kind of fun, because I can vent my frustrations with different situations with people in my life and it’s going to be interpreted on the other end through a female singer.

It was nice talking to you.

Yeah, thanks a lot man.
